5 Things to Consider to Keep Your Air Conditioning Efficient

April 23, 2019 by Webgator

Nothing compares to the euphoria you feel once you get inside a cool and comfortable home while it’s scorching hot day outside. This is probably one of the main reasons why homeowners and business owners alike agree that air conditioners are indeed a worthwhile investment but like many other things, your air conditioning system needs TLC too. Doing this doesn’t only ensure that you’re air conditioning unit will run smoothly, it will also help you save money in the long run.

Are you aware that your home’s heating and cooling system covers half of the utility bill?If you notice that your air conditioning is not functioning properly, then you might want to do a thorough check up to determine what’s wrong. Having a great cooling system can also be advantageous if you’re planning on selling a property. When a building inspector doeshis routine check-up, a defective air conditioning system might just ruin your chances of selling it at a higher price.

Your home’s air conditioning system is what keeps you cool during the hot summer days. With the energy costs rising every year, it’s vital to keep a good eye on your appliances. Otherwise, you’d end up with a high electricity bill.

How Can You Make Your Air Conditioner Efficient?

If you want to save on your power bill then you need to take precautionary measures to maintain your air conditioning unit. Here are some maintenance tips you can do to keep your air conditioners running efficiently:

  • Clean Out the Vents Accumulated debris on the vents of your air conditioning system can make the unit work twice as hard to be able to emit cool air. Check it the vents are clogged or obstructed. If you see debris piling up, vacuuming will help clear it out. It’s also important to keep it away from things that could block the air. Even if you clear it out, it still won’t be able to efficiently cool the room if it’s blocked with pieces of furniture or toys. Keep the area of the vent free from any obstructions.
  • Close The Blinds And Cover The Windows When sunlight enters the room through the windows it will invite heat and warmth and inevitably reduce the efficiency of your cooling system. Drawing your blinds during the day can help prevent the sun from shining directly into your window and warming your home.Another helpful tip to remember is to make sure to keep your curtains or blinds down when you go out to work. This will ensure that your home will stay cool while you’re away.
  • Increase Your A/C’s Thermostat During hot days, you can increase the temperature by a few degrees. This will help you save energy since it prevents your unit from working too hard. Start by changing the temp every one to two days, this will give your family enough time to adjust to the changes.Central air conditioned units also come with programmable thermostat, which you can control if you’re out at work. If you’re not at home, you can program your thermostat and increase the temperature by 5-8 degrees – enough to keep your home cool while you’re out. This method is a great way to extend the life of your unit and maintain its efficiency.
  • Keep Heat Generating Appliances Away From Your Thermostat Appliances such as ovens and lamps produce heat. Chances are, when they’re placed near the air conditioner, it will give the thermostat the impression that the room is warm it will then decrease the temperature in order to cool the room. This can make your air conditioning unit work doubly hard to maintain the coolness of the room. Air conditioning technicians know this and will install your thermostat as far away from a heat-generating area.
  • Change Your Filters Dust and dirt are usually the primary culprits when it comes to an inefficient air conditioning system. It’s important to check your filters every now and then to see if dusts have been building up. These dusts often cause stress on your entire a/c system and prevent it from working properly. Make it a habit of replacing old air filters. Air conditioning filters can easily be bought at hardware stores. Just ensure that you get the right filter size to save an extra trip back.

When air conditioners are properly maintained and cared for it will provide you and your family cooling comfort during hot summer days. While these maintenance tips will come in handy, engaging in air conditioning professionals at least once a year will help ensure that your a/c system is in a good shape.

DIY AC Cleaning

December 18, 2016 by Webgator

If money is tight, the last thing you want is to pay for an AC cleaning. Why hire it out when you can do it yourself? Here is a step-by-step guide to basic air conditioning cleaning. However, it is important to note that if your AC unit is under warranty and the warranty warns you against cleaning the unit yourself or else it will become void, it is best to get professional AC cleaners to do the cleaning for you.

1. Gather the materials you need to open up the machine and the cleaning supplies needed for the unit. Rags, a plastic scrubber, water with dish soap, and clean water (you can use the garden hose) are all you need. If the unit is a bit greasy from being exposed to cooking (like an AC unit in the kitchen) or from being exposed to outdoor elements, you might need to use a stronger cleaner to cut through the grease. Just make sure to rinse it well. You also will probably need some screwdrivers or ratchets to take apart some inside and outside parts of the unit for deep cleaning.

2. Unplug the AC unit if you are able. If there is an on and off switch, then turn it off. It’s best if all power is cut off when cleaning the unit so you can turn off the breaker to the electric circuit feeding the unit and surrounding areas. Be sure to double check with an electrical reader to make sure that there is no power going to the unit before working on it. You don’t want to get electrocuted or have your hands chopped off by the fan so don’t forget this important step.

3. Take pictures or take note of how the machine is put together so that you can put it back together properly later before taking it apart. Have the manual handy to know where you can begin to take it apart or to learn the different parts of the machine. Take apart the protective shell from the unit. Be careful not to hit any electrical wires or coils. Unscrew any screws and take apart any bolts. Store all the small parts like the screws and bolts in a small clear bag so that they’re together and will not get lost. It’s frustrating to have one missing bolt when putting things back together later.

4. Vacuum away cobwebs with a shop vacuum and wipe away dust with a rag. Wash the metal shell parts that have no electrical or coils. You can wash them down with a soapy rag to get rid of any residue and dust and then the parts can be rinsed free of soap with fresh water. If you’re in a hurry, you can just spray the metal shell parts clean with a garden hose.

5. If you have an inside AC unit, check the manual to see how you can take off the plastic filters inside. You can gently wash these plastic filters with soap and then rinse them with fresh water for a quick clean.

Have you had your air conditioner installed by Brisbane Air AirConditioning & Electrical? If you have any questions about the maintenance and cleaning of your particular air conditioning unit, don’t hesitate to talk to them. They can give you the best tips on how to keep your AC clean and working well for a very long time.

Keeping Air Conditioning Efficient

December 16, 2016 by Webgator

If you live in a tropical climate, then you will agree that air conditioning has got to be one of the best things ever invented. Without it, we couldn’t even mention where sweat would travel to or collect. Not only does air conditioning cool you down, it contributes to a more efficient work environment as well. The system itself is very simple. It’s nothing more than two coils, pipes, and refrigerant. As the cooling cycle begins, the refrigerant starts to circulate where it heads to the outside unit, releases heat, and cools down it then takes a U-turn back to the inside unit and is released as the cool air that we love. Enough boring stuff, what we really want to know is how we can keep costs down.

How can you keep things economical?

If we’re not careful, the above process can leave us feeling a little pain in our wallets. What can we do to maximize energy savings? What is the most efficient temperature? Some people like to set the temperature at 16 degrees Celsius as soon as they get inside. Be careful with that because you’re asking your air conditioner unit to do a lot especially if the temperature outside is really hot. Sometimes setting it to too low of a temperature will overwork the unit because it just might not be able to reach that temperature that you have set it to. So what can you do? Some say that 24-25 degrees Celsius is the perfect temperature setting for the machine. This is a temperature that your air conditioner will be able to maintain without having to overwork. Overworking it will only mean that your power bill will be huge at the end of the month. Remember, every degree that you change can mean huge energy savings in the long run. You need to find a balance between comfort and the perfect temperature setting for the unit.

Besides the above information, there are some other practical things that can help you save on power. In the summer, make sure to use curtains, blinds, shutters or anything you can get your hands on to cover your windows, thus providing shade inside your home. Experts say this will reduce heat absorption to almost 80%.

Make sure to keep up the maintenance on your air conditioner. Depending on the model you purchase, there will more than likely be filters that are re-washable that if dirty can cause a lot of problems.

Where is your outdoor unit located? Sometimes people will maintain the indoor unit but completely neglect the outdoor unit. Remember that both units are equally important.
On a regular basis, check to make sure that your air conditioning unit is free of debris that has started to pile up around it or on it like cobwebs. Debris will stifle air flow making the machine work harder and making it use more power.

Whether it’s setting your unit to the ideal temperature or keeping up with the maintenance, there are a lot of things that can help it to work more efficiently. However, no matter how much you maintain it you will at least once a year need to call in a professional like Brisbane Air AirConditioning and Electrical to give it a thorough clean. Don’t try to do it yourself. There are electronic parts that if wet could completely destroy your air conditioner. Once cleaned, you will immediately notice a change in air quality and savings in your power bill.

What To Do If Air Quality Is Bad Outdoors

December 15, 2016 by Webgator

Did you know that you can check your area air quality in real time? That’s just what the Real-time Air Quality Index Visual Map does. If you want to spend a lot of time outdoors on any given day or want to do some hard labour or strenuous exercise outside, you can check the air quality outside first by going online and typing into the search engine to see how the air quality is in your area. With this tool, you will be able to see if there are any dangers lurking in the air such as wood smoke from a forest fire or pollutants that have been released into the air by accident. At the moment, if you look at Australia’s Real-time Air Quality Index Visual Map, you can see that the air quality in major areas are green or gauged as good. However, there are a few major areas in the yellow or moderate section meaning the air quality is okay but for people with sensitivities, the air quality has a few pollutants that might irritate them. When the air quality in any given area becomes red, violet, or even darker red, then it is hazardous to be outdoors being exposed to the pollutants in the air. If people are outdoors at those times when it is hazardous to be out, their health can immediately start to suffer. What can you do if your area is prone to bad air quality and you are not able to move out? Here are some things you can do to lessen the effects of poor outdoor air quality on your health.

1. Stay away from areas where there are a lot of cars running or areas where there is a lot wood burning. If you can’t avoid traffic or are in it every day when commuting, always make sure your car air conditioner is running and your windows are sealed tight. Make sure the air filter in your car is cleaned regularly or more often than is necessary to keep the air quality in your car better than outdoors.

2. Wear a mask that filters air if riding your motorcycle for your commute to work. If there is wood smoke temporarily in your area, it’s best to wear a mask as well when outdoors for that time. Although it might not look nice on your face, at least you’re protecting your lungs.

3. If you suffer from chronic lung conditions, it’s best to not go outdoors at that time and make sure your medications or respirators are with you at all times.

4. Make sure you install a good air conditioner or air cleaner that filters out pollutants from the air coming in from outdoors. Brisbane Air AirConditioning & Electrical can install for you the best air conditioners with filters that give your home great indoor air quality. You can breathe easier (literally) by having clean air circulating in your home. Always remember to have your air conditioner cleaned and maintained regularly as well to continue to have breathable air in your home.

5. If you have to go outside, don’t do any exercise or strenuous work so your lungs aren’t working hard while being bombarded with pollutants. Do your exercises at home or at a gym where they have good air conditioning and air filter systems that keep outdoor air pollution at bay.

Remember to use common sense. When pollutants are about, don’t go out.

Negative Effects Of Poor Indoor Air Quality And Solutions

December 8, 2016 by Webgator

How has your health been lately? Have you experienced any of the following symptoms: dizziness, headaches, ear infections, hearing loss, sneezing, nosebleeds, fever, chills, muscle pain, rashes, asthma, lung cancer, watery eyes, redness, nauseas, vomiting, coughing, or throat irritation? The list is long but if you are dealing with any of the above problems, what do you think could be the culprit? According to one report, these things could all be caused by poor indoor air quality. Some of the worst culprits for indoor air pollutants are tobacco smoke and biological sources. Let’s take a look at some ways you can detect and deal with bad air quality.

How is the air in your home? Is it stuffy or smelly? It’s time to do something about these things. You need to figure out ways to get better ventilation in your home. We can get in the habit of locking our place up like a prison cell. We shut the doors and windows and this completely stifles air flow. You need to have a balance because you don’t just want to open up all the windows because there is a lot of pollution that lingers outside as well. So what can help? Something that has become popular is trickle ventilation. This screen will fit on most windows and will not only let air in but filter it at the same time. This will allow your house to breathe a lot better.

Turn on your air conditioner. If you don’t have one, then get Brisbane Air to install one for you. There are a lot of things floating in the air that will cause bad air quality. The air conditioner will remove water from the air, thus removing pollutants in the process. HEPA air filters are something that work well with AC units. You can also purchase HEPA air filters that are stand alone units. They usually use a fan that will suck in air and clean it. Be careful as they are a little noisy.

Make sure to check your appliances that use gas. You need to ensure that these burn clean because if not, it can contribute to bad air quality. Make sure to contact a technician who can come and clean the jets on your gas appliances. Its been said that these irritating gases can cause wheezing in people that don’t even have asthma. When using your stove keep your window open and turn a fan on.

Clean your home wisely! What does that mean? If you’re not careful, your cleaning products can contribute to poor air quality. VOCs or volatile organic compounds can be found in some cleaning products as well as paints and some floor polishes. These VOCs can go into the air as a gas and cause irritation. Good cleaning products to use are fragrance-free cleaners or ones that say they have little to low VOCs.

We all love them, but the truth is the air quality in your home will improve if you do what you can to keep your pets outside. If you find this something that will be difficult to do then at the very least try to keep your pet outside of your bedroom. Of course, regular dog grooming will go a long way.

Five Reasons Why May Is The Best Time to Buy Commercial Air Conditioning

May 13, 2016 by Webgator

“The cooler weather offers the best buying opportunity.”

Air ConditionerIf you’re looking for commercial air conditioning, the month of May is the absolute best time of year to search. Here are a couple reasons why May is the best time to buy.

#1. Less Stress For Commercial Air Conditioning In May

Most people – especially businesses– forget about their failing air conditioning unit as soon as the cooler weather arrives. That’s a mistake. Not only will prices be higher when the summer comes around again, but every man and his horse will be battling for to have a unit installed.
We find that engineers will be pushed to capacity working around the clock, and usually, the best contractors are already on jobs. This means either using less experienced engineers or having to have your staff swelter in the hot months.

#2. A Chance To Measure Your Options

As the weather cools, now is the time to plan for a more productive summer next year. Measure up your space, and review your current air conditioning system. Why isn’t it man enough for the job? It could be that it’s old, tired, and unable to cool like it used to.
Or maybe your cooling needs have changed. You might have more equipment giving out more heat, or you may employ more people in the same room. Also, your offices might have been redesigned, and the air con hasn’t kept pace.

#3. New 2016 Features

Technology is advancing, so is air conditioning. Consider WiFi controllers or perhaps you want a uniform atmosphere in the entire office. New systems are also more energy efficient and cost a lot less to run. Once you know what you want and why, then it will be time to call for expert help.

#4. Easier Access To Professionals

With less demand for their time and services, it will be easier to get an air con specialist to discuss your needs. Let the expert create the best system for you. With fewer buyers in the market, and you’ll be able to take advantage of the best providers.

Here’s a tip to make the most of your time with an air con expert: although you know what you want, prepare to ask the right questions and be flexible – there may be a great solution to your needs that you haven’t yet thought of and that might even be cheaper than your budget.

#5. Time To Do A Deal

If you’ve had a sweltering summer, for the best commercial air conditioning and great promotional offers, May is definitely the month to make a deal. For more information or to get a quick free quote, contact Brisbane Air today.

Be Cool with School Air Conditioning

July 17, 2015 by Webgator

School Air ConditioningIf children complain about being unable to concentrate in class, one of the most likely causes is classroom temperature. Schools in which children regularly work in classroom temperatures of 28 degrees or higher may find themselves with lower than average examination results, and a problem with aggressive behaviour among their students!

For schools and colleges that want to up results and grades, and benefit from a happier learning environment, air conditioning commonly seen as a ‘must have’. However, despite these benefits, installation of air conditioning also raises questions about cost and architectural impact. The outcomes for schools that benefit from air conditioning surprises many ‘old school’ types (the ones who like to tell everyone that “In my day we weren’t spoiled with air conditioning. What are the kids of today complaining about?”).

Comprehension and concentration drops in the heat

Students that berate their teachers with complaints about the heat, hair plastered to their foreheads, and eyes dropping heavily, aren’t deliberately swinging the lead. Plenty of medical studies (and as reviewed by Professor Michael Nagel of the University of the Sunshine Coast) show that the brain begins to close down at 28 degrees.

By the time the temperature hits 30 degrees, the brain has begun to seek survival. Teachers asking their pupils to add two numbers together in such conditions are likely to be answered with blank faces and head scratching. Perhaps worse, high temperatures also affect the brain’s neurotransmitters – leading to disruptive behaviour which might otherwise be out-of-character.

Despite such medical evidence, Queensland has no upper temperature limit in its classrooms. However, this may be due to the perceived cost of installation of air conditioning: with no upper limit enforced, it is the responsibility of individual schools to foot the bill.

Cooling classes doesn’t have to be costly

The running cost of air conditioning in a school also surprises most.  Ducted air conditioners allow different classrooms to be cooled to different levels from a central control panel. Timers can be used to make sure separate zones are switched off entirely when empty (and turned on manually when in use if outside the usual timetable). This means running costs are way lower than many would expect: comfort is maintained in an energy saving environment. Always conscious of costs, many of Brisbane’s businesses have chosen ducted air conditioning because of these benefits.

Architectural anonymity of schools air conditioning

Many schools, especially those with older buildings, are reticent to invest in air conditioning because of the potential architectural impact. However, modern units can be easily concealed, and silent running units produce virtually no noise pollution. From the outside, school buildings will maintain their traditional lines. Inside, students will be able to work in comfort and silence. One of Brisbane Air’s recommended manufacturers, Mitsubishi, has had its air conditioning installed in schools such as Brisbane Girls Grammar for reasons of cost, comfort, and design.

Benefit from the advantages of air conditioning in your school

The needs of every school vary. With more than three decades serving the Brisbane community with its air conditioning needs, Brisbane Airs’ technical experts are perfectly positioned to advice your school or college as to its exact air conditioning needs.

We’ll work with you to meet your aims and within your budget. You’ll be left with a more harmonious, hardworking student base. Your truancy figures will fall, tested results improve, and papers will no longer have to be chased across a classroom when an unexpected gust of wind blows through an open window.

Air Conditioner DIY Maintenance Tips To Be Ready For Summer

November 12, 2014 by Brisbane Air

Repairman fixing air conditioner unit

You’ll want to stay cool this summer, and at home that means it’s time to switch on the air conditioning. It may be that you haven’t run your system for months. If this is the case, you might be best advised to have your unit serviced before the worst of the heat hits us. However, there are a few simple DIY maintenance tips that will help you to be ready for a hot summer.

Five things to do to get your air conditioner working at the start of summer

  1. If your unit is partially outside then remove any weeds and overgrown shrubs around the unit, but retain any shade from which it benefits
  2. Make sure the unit is level, and if it isn’t then take action to make it so
  3. Expert DIY folk can clean fins and coils. Use a light brush on the fins and remove any dirt. These are delicate, so be careful not to damage them. If they are damaged, then call an air conditioning engineer to undertake a maintenance check. The coil can be cleaned with a coil cleaner (allow the unit to dry properly before switching on)
  4. Check all coolant lines and ductwork for damage. If insulation is damaged, the efficiency will be decreased and running costs will rise. Any damaged insulation will need to be replaced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions
  5. Check the switch panel and thermostat controls, paying attention to faulty switches

How to maintain an air conditioner during the summer months

Once the Brisbane summer is under way, it’s important to make sure your air conditioning unit is properly maintained. Doing so will help keep energy bills as low as possible and make sure you’re as cool as you want to be during a long, hot summer. Here is a check list of things to do at least once a month:

  • Refrigerant levels are important. If these are low, your system will not be working efficiently and there is a high risk of expensive damage
  • Clean fins and coils
  • Check the filters and clean as necessary
  • Maintain a clean area around outside units

If in doubt, shout!

If you are in any doubt as to the health of your air conditioning system, then you should contact an air conditioning technician and request a service. Action taken early may save an expensive repair later. Finally, never attempt any maintenance or repair work yourself that you are not certain of being able to do.
