How Does A Split System Air Conditioner Work?

A split system air conditioning system uses two different units:

• An indoor air handling unit
• Outdoor compressor unit

These are connected through copper piping that contains a refrigerant. This product helps the heat move from the indoor handling unit to the outdoor unit—where it’s released.

Many people don’t realise that air conditioners actually remove heat from the air, allowing the existing air in the building to cool down.

What is a Split System Air Conditioner suitable for?

How Ducted Air Conditioning Works

While most people think of air conditioning as the unit that sits outside, this is only one component of ducted air conditioning. There is also another unit which is housed within the roof. This roof unit is the indoor air handling unit, while the unit outside is the compressor/ condenser unit. Together these units are the engine of ducted air conditioning, but without all the other components working properly the benefits will never be felt.

The air is pumped through a system of pipes, called ducts, which are located in the roof space. These ducts are usually silver to reflect heat better, which helps keep the air inside remain cool as it moves. Often a steel coil inside the duct will add strength, and extra insulation will help with energy efficiency.

The energy efficiency of ducted air conditioners is greatly aided by ‘zoning’, which is the dividing of space into different areas. This allows the system to work more effectively, with a ‘dump zone’ or ‘constant area’ normally used, to ensure that the whole system is never fully closed. If the system did close completely there could be a build-up of air pressure within the ducting which could cause damage.

Rooms or areas are zoned individually, which means that you control the airflow into each zone. Again, this adds to energy efficiency, and full benefits are truly felt when you also take a few energy saving precautions, such as keeping doors and windows closed.

Air regulators (or dampers) control the air being circulated into each zone, with air entering via a diffuser. There are different designs of diffusers, but all do the same job as a vent to allow air into the required space. The dampers open and close to allow the treated air to enter the room, and when a zone is switched off the damper closes completely.

Air is returned to the system through return air grilles. Like diffusers, there are different designs of grilles to suit all visual tastes. These important pieces of the jigsaw also house air filters which help to purify the air as it circulates. Some more advanced diffusers have an LED light that alerts the user when the enclosed filter needs cleaning: dirty grilles and filters directly impact the efficiency of ducted air conditioning, so it is important to ensure that all filters are cleaned regularly.

In a nutshell, that is all there is to ducted air conditioners: an indoor unit and outdoor unit working to pump air through the home or office, with each designated air conditioned zone supplied with air carried by ducts and dispersed through diffusers and regulated by dampers.

What is a Ducted Air Conditioner Suitable For?

Ducted air conditioning is hugely versatile, and is controlled by a zonal system that allows different areas to be on or off if and when necessary. Depending upon the type of system installed (see below), it can be used to cool or heat rooms or spaces. The whole system can be controlled by timer, meaning rooms can be cool when they are needed to be so without leaving the air conditioning on all day.

This type of system is ideal for the modern family home, where many rooms are likely to be used simultaneously. The house benefits from no hot or cold spots, meaning you can walk around the home in complete comfort: traditional systems don’t offer this luxury. Children can do their homework in comfort in their own rooms, while parents can watch their favourite television programs in peace.

Ducted air conditioning is also well suited to office buildings: no more putting jackets on and taking them off again when moving from one cold office to a hot office baked by the sunlight streaming through wall to ceiling windows. Zonal regulation also allows greater flexibility and distribution of air where it is really needed. Quiet running means less disturbance from work, and the top level filtration provided by ducted air conditioning ensures pure air all day and night.

The internal components of ducted air conditioning come in a range of designs, and so can be used in a variety of situations. They can melt seamlessly into a room’s décor, or be used as a focal design feature (in the way ceiling roses used to be): so, also great for when remodelling or for those building their dream home.

Ducted Refrigerated Air Conditioning (also known as reverse air) is ideal for family homes that require cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. What type of air conditioning do you want in your new home?

If you are building a new home in Brisbane, then there is a strong likelihood that you will require some form of air conditioning. At Brisbane Air, we can help you through the process of designing and selecting the right type of air conditioning system for your new home. For new residential properties, the main choices for air conditioning are ducted systems, multi head systems and single split systems. You can find more detailed information on these types of air conditioning on our residential air conditioning page. The vast majority of our customers who are building new homes choose ducted air conditioning. New ducted air conditioning systems are a popular choice because they cover all living and sleeping areas and are very neat solutions, with just one outdoor condensing unit.

How do you get an initial cost estimate for air conditioning?

When you have decided on the layout of your new house and have detailed floor plans, then you can email your plans to us at info@brisbaneair.com.au

and request an initial recommendation and cost estimate. If you have any specific requirements, for example any specific areas that must be zoned separately, then please make us aware of these requirements at an early stage. In addition, if you are going to finance the new air conditioning through a Payment Plan option, then please advise us of this at an early stage. After we have received your emailed plans, we will then study them and email back an initial recommendation and quotation. We recommend three main brands for ducted air conditioning, being Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Actron Air. Our experience has shown that these are both top quality brands. This initial “summary quotation” is subject to final customisation of the system and satisfactory site and frame inspection.

It is usually at this stage, that new homebuilders realise how much better value a specialist air conditioning company such as Brisbane Air is, compared to the option proposed by their builder. Our experience has shown that builders do not always offer good value for money for air conditioning, be that a “lower quality system” or a much higher price or sometimes both!

Do you work with builders to install the new air conditioning?

Yes, we have worked with many builders over the years and have had many positive experiences. For example, if your new home will have more than one level, and you want to have ducted air conditioning throughout, then you must ensure that provision is made for ducted vents to be installed during the building process. Specifically, we need to arrange for our Head Technician to visit the site as soon as the frame is up and meet with yourselves and the Building Supervisor. At this stage, we want to agree on what type and size of system we are installing, how many outlets are being installed, the size of the outlets, the areas to be zoned, where the ducted droppers will be located, how many control pads will be installed, where the control pads will be located and where the outdoor condensing unit will be situated.

Following this visit, and based on these on-site discussions, we will prepare a full detailed, written quotation for you. If BrisbaneAir is your selected air conditioning company, then often your builder will require copies of our BSA, Arctik, WorkCover, Liability Insurance and Health and Safety Procedures. As required by your builder, we can then supply copies of all these important documents (usually via email) to your builder’s administration section. We always provide information in a timely manner to ensure that unnecessary hold-ups are prevented.

During the build process, we then liaise with your builder to attend the site to install the indoor fan coil and droppers, and then return at a later stage to “rough-in”, and then return again near house completion to commission the system and show you how to operate it.

When will payments be due for the new air conditioning?

Should you choose Brisbane Air as your air conditioning contractor for your new home, then we ask that you complete and sign our Acceptance of Quotation Form, including standard terms and conditions, along with an initial deposit. At completion of the “rough-in” stage, we then ask for a 50% work in progress payment. The remaining balance is then due at the completion of our work, when we will issue you a full Tax Invoice.

What warranty do you provide and what about servicing?

We have been in business continuously for over 30 years and we only install quality air conditioning systems. As proof of the fact that we stand behind the quality of our work, we offer a 5 year warranty on new installation work. In addition, all the new systems that we supply come with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. Therefore in total, you get a very comprehensive 5 year warranty on your new air conditioning system. Apart from cleaning the filters, your role in maintenance of your system is very limited. We recommend professional servicing of your new systems at least once every 18 months. “They Are Quiet, Effective And Obviously Efficient.”

I am SO pleased with my new air conditioners!! They are quiet, effective and obviously efficient.

I have Really used them. I had them installed so that I would be comfortable, so they have been on more than they’ve been off lately! I don’t normally run them 24/7 but I have when I’ve needed to. The dehumidify mode alone has been a life saver.

My daily power usage (which includes a not very efficient hot water heater) while staying cool and comfortable through a Brisbane summer, has been just over $2.60 a day!

We recently wanted to install an air conditioning unit to cool our home which has an open plan and larger floor area. After enquiring to Brisbane Air online, I received a very quick response from Ian. After a short discussion, an appointment was made for Barney to visit the home and provide some advice. Barney is very … down to earth and explained all the options in ‘layman’s’ terms. After we accepted the quote, Ian then promptly scheduled the installation. On the day of the installation, Mick and James arrived on time and explained everything about the process. The unit we had installed was a larger unit and they handled the entire process with ease and professionalism. Care was taken to clean up and the respect and care shown to the property and their customers was very refreshing. It is very unfortunate that in this day and age, customer service lacks with so many businesses however Brisbane Air showed right from the first point of enquiry to the completion of the job that they are a rare commodity in the business world by showing superior customer service skills. Considering the installation occurred right in the middle of their busy summer period and on a very hot day, nothing was too much trouble for them and we can’t speak high enough of the business. Rather than rush in and write a review in the first few days after the installation of our new Mitsubishi air conditioner by Brisbane Air, we have decided to wait a couple of months, trying out the system in various weather conditions.
